Hello, District #43 Optimists!
The 103rd Optimist International Convention is coming up soon in Atlanta, Georgia! It will be a live, in-person event with mask wearing, social distancing, and following current COVID-19 health directives.
What a wonderful opportunity we have to interact with Optimists from other districts, to be a part of the business of our parent organization, and to be re-energized as we receive training and helpful ideas on ways to enhance effectiveness in our outreach! It will also be an opportunity to get better acquainted with members from NC East, as we will be dining out together one evening. There is plenty to explore on your own in the Atlanta area, and a group outing to a Braves vs Marlins game is being organized by the Convention Committee. Early Bird Registration with reduced rates ends on May 1, plus hotel rooms are filling up quickly, so don’t delay in making your arrangements. A tentative agenda is posted below for your perusal. Here is the link for convention registration:
There is a great schedule of roundtrip flights from Raleigh-Durham, and the cost seems to be around $200. Flights from Wilmington appear to be a little more expensive, around $240, and from Greenville, about $230.
Of course, some of you might prefer to drive your car, and that is certainly a possibility as driving time from all points in eastern North Carolina appear to be about 6 hours for a distance of around 400 miles.
There are two drawbacks to driving: (1) Atlanta traffic can be horrendous and (2) the cost of parking at the hotel is $50 per day! For that, you could easily pay for a flight and use Uber or a taxi wherever you need to go if it is too far to walk!
Here is the link for registering at the convention hotel, a showplace in and of itself:
